The cursED 'shoulds'

For every fork in the road, Meriel, there are often two paths from which to choose: the one you "should" take and the one you want to take. Take the second. Always take the second. I did, The Universe.

I know I bang on about the pesky language of obligation and necessity, that's because I hear it so often. Whether it's myself, friends, family, colleagues or clients. Should. Ought. Must. Need. At this point in my life I should be focussed on my career. I ought to spend more time with my family. I need him to see my point of view. I must mow the lawn! The list is endless. And all of it feels a bit 'meh' to start with, followed by 'if I don't then this will happen ....' and Guilt.

How often are we faced with a choice, the figurative fork in the road, and there's an option which somehow seems the sensible route, the 'should' route, and the alternative which is exciting, scary, makes your heart pump, the 'want' route. And how often do we take 'should'? I know I've done it loads of times. And now that I'm older and wiser, I take the 'want' route far more often. Advancing age has helped me to prioritise my wants and dispense with my shoulds (that and some excellent coaching of course!).

The great thing about choices is there are always plenty. You'll never make the wrong choice. You'll make a choice and get some feedback having made it. You may take stock and then make a different choice, or carry on as you were.

I love this little quote, it tallies brilliantly with my Note from the Universe above. I bet you won't be able to resist the paths you want to take in future :)
